The Roullier Innovation Awards 2018 Ceremony day
On Thursday 28 June, the 2018 Roullier Innovation Awards trophies were presented to the two winners whose work met the various selection criteria set by the judging panel: quality and scope of scientific production, originality of approach, nature of contribution to CMI Roullier research and training of their researchers, and significance in terms of dissemination of science and technology.
Around sixty projects were submitted by universities or research institutes from nearly 30 countries around the world, including Brazil, USA, France, Italy, Ireland, Morocco, Nigeria, India and Pakistan. Choosing the winners was a difficult task, as all the submissions dealt with the main themes of Groupe Roullier’s work, such as:
- Soil microbiology (one third of projects)
- Reduction of losses and environmental impact via enhancing the uptake of nutrients, including nitrogen,
- Abiotic stress: water, salinity, global warming
The Group’s internal scientific committee made an initial selection of 10 finalists. From these, the jury nominated the two winners:
- ITALY: Dr Laura ZANIN, Department of Agricultural, Food, Environmental and Animal Sciences at the University of Udine, for her work on improved effectiveness of nitrogen for better assimilation by the plant, and a reduction in losses to the environment.
- AUSTRIA: Prof Dr Walter W. WENZEL, University of Vienna, Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Department of Forest and Soil Science, Institute of Soil Research, for his work on soil microbiology, which is now a vast field of experimentation in which only 10% of microorganisms that make up the field are known. This is a major topic for the Group, which started with marine limestone in 1959.
In addition to a prize of €60,000 each, the two research laboratories will sign a partnership contract with the CMI for a period of one year, during which they will have the opportunity to use some of its unique equipment to carry out their research projects.
What’s more, the relevance of projects put forward will lead us to develop new partnerships with many of the universities that applied. This will enable CMI Roullier to enrich its expertise in Plant Nutrition in order to develop new and exclusive solutions, but also to advance research in a wider sense and make CMI a real accelerator of Innovation.
The CMI and TAI in partnership with the French Atlas of Soil Bacteria
Soil represents a vital area of research for the agriculture of tomorrow. The billions of bacteria that can be found in one single gram of soil are an important source of growth for plants. It is for this reason that this issue has a specific R&D department within the CMI, where we have taken in two postdoctoral researchers from Professor Lionel Ranjard’s team from the INRA Agroecology Mixed Research Unit.

The ISTRO organises an international conference every three years to assess progress in terms of research and innovation attracting around 350 participants (researchers, development engineers, technical or agricultural machinery institutes, educators).
