23rd meeting of the ISS International Seaweed Symposium
The 23rd meeting of the International Seaweed Symposium (ISS) was held in South Korea from 28 April - 3 May 2019, on the theme of “Seaweeds: from Tradition to Innovation”. The ISS is held every three years, and is the largest international convention in the field of macroalgae. The event’s 800 participants represented academic and private research bodies, as well as the industrial sector. Over 40 countries were represented at the event.
Notable inclusions among the array of topics covered at the symposium were algaculture, ecology, seaweed genetics and taxonomy (description and classification of seaweeds into group), alga-sourced biofuels, new bioactive algal molecules, applications in health and nutrition, and biostimulants.
Groupe Roullier was of course in attendance, given that macroalgae have historically been our core resource for the development of unique agronomic products. Cécile Le Guillard, Doctor of Marine Biotechnology specialising in seaweed, presented CMI Roullier and the work of the Plant Nutrition laboratory.
Our participation in this international scientific convention was an opportunity to highlight CMI Roullier’s R&D work in the field of employing macroalgae for plant nutrition. Over the course of the 4-day symposium, several new international university contacts were formed with the aim of developing new partnerships to pursue our innovations in this field.

After receiving more than 100 applications (65 Plant Nutrition projects and 36 Animal Nutrition projects) in answer of this international contest organized by the CMI Roullier, our two international juries rigorously reviewed them – first individually and then collectively – in order to choose the competition’s two winners.
